Popular Misconceptions About Laser Hair Removal: Cost, Coverage, And Consequences
Doug Smith

It is the nature of humans to fear the unknown. Much doubt and uncertainty surrounded the introduction of laser hair removal for cosmetic purposes. It was a new and novel process for removing unwanted body hair. Many objections were raised: too expensive, harmful side effects, and it was even proclaimed as a scam.

Years later, laser hair removal is a standard procedure in cosmetic surgery offices and clinics around the world. This widely-accepted hair removal practice is a viable alternative to the individual removal of unwanted hairs. As with most new things, some doubt and fear linger. This article is an attempt to set straight some of the misinformation, doubts, and fears surrounding laser hair removal.

To begin, the cost of laser hair removal is not only for the wealthy. Laser hair removal of small areas can cost as low as $200. It is only reasonable that the cost would increase and the area to be treated increases (backs, legs, etc.). When compared to continuous hair removal treatments such as waxing, permanent laser hair removal can be a worthwhile one-time investment.

When laser hair removal is performed by a trained professional, side effects are minimized. Patients with darker skin tones and light colored hair may experience burns. However, such effects are normally negligible and the irritation fades quickly. Swelling, which dissipates within hours, may be seen on patients with sensitive skin.

For maximum, laser hair removal should not be performed on pregnant women. No medical connection between the procedure and any childbirth complications has been seen. Nevertheless, pregnant women should avoid all unnecessary medical procedures. Pregnancy has numerous physical, chemical, and hormonal effects on the mother's body, and even ordinary, routine medical procedures might have unanticipated effects. It is prudent and safe to wait until after the baby is born.

Under most conditions, laser hair removal can be applied to any part of the body where unwanted hair occurs. It is not limited to the areas where it is most frequently applied, such as the face or bikini area.

New medical technology is often treated with skepticism and doubt. Wider acceptance comes as more people have positive results with the procedures, doctors gain proficiency with the equipment, and prices fall due to competition. Who knows - one day soon we might be performing laser hair removal in our homes as routinely as we use razors now.
